Kids and Exercise

Exercise is the activity requiring physical effort, carried out to sustain or improve health and fitness. In simple words, we can say that, a person not being Sedentary (Sedentary lifestyle is a type of lifestyle with no or irregular physical activity) all the time.

Why is Exercise important for kids?

In today’s world, where videogames and television plays an important (!) role in a child’s early stages of life, it is no surprise that there is an alarming increase in childhood obesity and diabetes. For this reason, physical fitness is more important than ever for today's children and teens. In fact, regular participation in physical activity is highly linked to enhancement of brain function and cognition. More importantly, a physically active kid has stronger bones and muscles as they tend to be more physically fit.

Benefits of Exercise:

A kid who is active and does regular exercise has the following benefits.

  • Has stronger muscles and bones
  • Reduced risk of developing type-2 diabetes
  • Increased blood and oxygen flow to the brain
  • Feels better about them
  • Keeps a healthy weight
  • Helps to sleep better
  • Has more energy
  • Less prone to injuries
  • Lower blood cholesterol levels
  • Maintains a healthy blood pressure
  • More healthy and happy

These benefits are very much significant for a child’s healthy growth. Overall, physical activity produces physical, psychological and social benefits.

Exercise and Age:

Age is not a barrier for doing exercises. It is advisable that parents must take care of their preschool kids or even children less than 15 years for that matter. According to your age, you shall choose to do exercise or any physical activity which best suits your interest as well.

Children usually choose to play in water, or any kinds of sport, teens tend to do some weight lifting courses, gymming or aerobics, and adults may choose to go for a walk. A minimum of one hour physical activity is recommended for everyone and it’s very much essential for a healthy lifestyle. Swimming is considered as one of the best exercises for every age group.

Inactive children are likely to become inactive adults.

How do I promote physical activity in my child?

Physical activity should become a part of their lives as eating and sleeping is. It should be increased by reducing sedentary time (e.g., watching television, playing computer video games).

Physical education, provided at school, is an ideal way to encourage activity and develop fitness among children. Take responsibility to provide extracurricular physical activity programs. Always keep in mind to plan and encourage physical activities that are appropriate and safe for your children.

Be your child’s hero:

As parents, it’s your everyday responsibility to make your child involve in any exercises or activities which keep them active and mobile to maintain good health. Adequate participation in physical activity during early childhood is considered essential for normal growth and development. So, be a role model to them; separate time for physical activities daily, make it more fun and enjoyable and help cultivate this good habit of regular exercise or physical activity in your child.
