Importance of washing hands

Probably every child would hear this from their parents every day. This is one of the best health practices to be followed daily by everyone. The main reason is that we can probably avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others by keeping our hands clean. Diseases spread through rather easily if you’re not washing your hands with soap and water. So washing your hands often helps to avoid any potential risk of getting sick and protects yourself.

When should I wash my hands?

Germs easily transfers to your hands from something you touch with germs on it. And if you touch someone or something with your hands, germs transfer from you to others. This cycle doesn’t stop unless you wash and keep your hands clean.

Below are the few scenarios where you must wash your hands.

  • Before eating food
  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before and after you meet someone who is sick
  • After using the bathroom
  • After playing outside
  • After you change a baby's diaper
  • After you cough, sneeze or blow your nose.
  • When your hands are dirty
  • After blowing your nose or
  • After you cough or sneeze
  • After treating a wound
  • After touching your pets or any animal

How should I wash my hands?

It's generally the best practice to wash your hands with soap and water. Follow the below steps to wash your hands easily:

  • Wet your hands with warm water and then add liquid or soap.
  • Rub your hands together and lather up for at least 20 seconds. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  • Rinse your hands well.
  • Dry your hands with a clean or disposable towel or air dryer.
  • If possible, use a towel or your elbow to turn off the faucet. Avoid touching it after washing your hands.
