Arthritis - Causes

Arthritis is more common in women than men and especially in those who are overweight. It is the inflammation around the joint which can be caused due to the daily wear and tear of the joint, muscle strains caused by forceful movements and from fatigue. Arthritis can also be a result of any damage to the joint from disease or injuries.

One common of type of arthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, is caused when your body’s immune system attacks the tissues of the body. It usually attacks synovium, the lining of the joints, but can also affect the other parts of the body.  Synovium produces a fluid to help in nourishing the cartilage which covers and protects the ends of the long bones at joints.

Risk factors for arthritis include:

  • Genes
  • Overweight
  • Age – risk for arthritis increases as you grow older
  • Gender – more common in women
  • Joint injuries
