Fibromyalgia - Causes

The exact cause for fibromyalgia is still unknown. This condition is mostly associated with tender points on the body. Tender points are the specific places on the neck, shoulders, arms, hips, back and legs. These places serve as the trigger points for fibromyalgia where even little pressure on them can cause pain.

All these can be a result of increased reactivity of pain-sensitive nerve cells in the brain. This could possibly be due to an imbalance in brain chemicals.

Possible factors than can cause fibromyalgia include people with:

  • Recent physical trauma or surgery
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Psychological stress
  • Family history
  • Mood disorders
  • Central nervous system problems
  • Infections

Other risk factors include age and gender. Though fibromyalgia can affect people of any age and gender, it is most common in middle-aged women.
