Insomnia - Causes


Insomnia can be caused by a number of reasons. Many people may have insomnia at some point but they would start to notice only when it becomes chronic.  Insomnia can occur independently or sometimes it can be a result of another problem.

Some of the major factors that can cause sleeping problems include:

Medications: Use of certain drugs, caffeine, alcohol, pain killer, nicotine

Medical conditions: Gastrointestinal problems, certain allergies, heart diseases, breathing difficulties, Alzheimer’s diseases, Obsessive compulsive disorder

Psychological problems: Depression, stress, anxiety, fear

Other common causes includes the below:

  • Poor sleep habits
  • Frequent shift changes at work
  • Genetic conditions
  • Menopause
