Sepsis - Causes

Sepsis is caused by infection. Infection can be of any type – bacterial, fungal or viral and may come from any of these:

  • Urinary tract
  • Abdominal
  • Lung
  • Bloodstream
  • Skin

Infection occurs when germs enter a person’s body and multiply. It can cause one or multiple disorders based on the type and severity of the infection. This infection may lead to sepsis as well. If sepsis is not diagnosed and treated at the early stages, it can affect multiple organs such as kidney, liver, etc in your body.

People most at risk for sepsis include those:

  • who are hospitalized
  • who have weaker immune systems
  • who are already in ICU for some other diseases
  • who are very young and old
  • who have severe wound
