Hemorrhoids - Diagnosis

External hemorrhoids can be diagnosed by the doctor simply by having a glance on it. Tests and procedures to diagnose internal hemorrhoids may include:

Evaluation of the anal area in which examination includes:

  • A digital rectal examination, in which a lubricated finger is gently inserted into the anus
  • A look at the perianal skin.
  • Using a short lighted probe called an anoscope to examine the rectal area.

In some cases the doctor may need to examine additional tests such as flexible sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy to confirm it is not due any disease in the anal or rectal.
