Most defining symptoms are the widespread pain and extreme tiredness in the body. Symptoms and its intensity can vary from person to person. They can be mild, moderate or severe. Some people may have pain daily while for others the symptoms may disappear for long. Common symptoms include:

  • Increased sensitivity to pain
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Painful menstrual periods
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Light and noise sensitivity
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Problems with thinking and memory

Other symptoms may include depression or anxiety, migraines, tension headaches and gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD). Researchers believe that stress often worsens the condition from better to worse.
