Diarrhea - Symptoms


The symptoms of diarrhea include loose, liquid stools, an urgent need to use the bathroom, and increased frequency of bowel movements. The symptoms may appear within 5 to 48 hours after the intake of the contaminated food and water. It will be more severe during the first 24 hours.

Other symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Abdominal swelling or bloating
  • Vomiting and Nausea
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Bloody stools
  • Lack of bowel control
  • A frequent urge to evacuate your bowels
  • loss of appetite
  • Rectal bleeding and pain

Frequent diarrhea and vomiting may leads to dehydration due excessive loss of water from the body. Signs of dehydration include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Dry eyes
  • Tiredness and a lack of energy
  • Thirst
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Infrequent urination
